Auto body kits
Every driver always strives to improve the characteristics and features of his car, make it more functional and maneuverable, and also tries to give it individuality and expressiveness. One of the ways to achieve this is body kits in cars, which have rapidly gained popularity in auto tuning. They allow you to achieve all the listed goals at minimal costs and get a car that stands out in the gray stream of standard transport.
For car bodies and their purpose
To begin with, it is worth clarifying that a body kit is an element of the car body, which is made in the form of various overlays and is installed in order to provide certain functions, namely:
- protective;
- aerodynamic;
- decorative
As for the latter, it is about giving the model special features, for example, elegant or sporty, as well as stylishness, aggressiveness or audacity. A good choice of solutions - and your car will look completely different!
In terms of improving aerodynamics, it is possible to reduce the coefficient of frontal resistance with the help of overlays, to increase the body's fluidity. This element ensures the removal of air flows from areas of excess pressure (in particular, the underhood space, the bottom of the car, thresholds). Due to this simple move, it is possible to make the grip of the wheels with the road surface stronger. Practice has also proven that due to the reduction of air resistance, it is possible to achieve an increase in maximum speed, as well as to make fuel consumption more economical.
The protective function is performed by various thresholds and overlays that cover and strengthen the "weak spots" of the body, protecting against external mechanical influences and impacts.
Types of body kits on a car
Modern auto tuning involves many unique solutions that can radically transform a car and significantly improve its characteristics. Considering what car body kits are, you can choose options depending on the tasks set before them from several of the following groups:
- Front bumper. This element helps to protect the bottom from oncoming air currents, helps to press the front of the car, is the basis for attaching spoilers.
- Rear bumper. This type of lining is identical in function to the front ones, but at the same time provides protection against mechanical damage to the trunk. It is interesting that you can easily put new ones to hide defects and dents that are already on the trunk.
- Spoilers. These are overlays that are more often installed on the front bumpers of the car and repeat its shape, their functional tasks are primarily to regulate the direction of the air flow and divert it to the side. Thanks to them, it is possible to protect the hood from solid particles, stones, sand, which rise from the road surface during movement and can damage the paint coating. Interestingly, they also manage to protect the hood from insects. There are also spoilers for the rear hood and trunk, and here their function is oppressive.
- Anti-wings. This is a special overlay, structurally similar to an airplane wing, but turned upside down. Accordingly, its tasks are the same - to help press the car to the road surface while driving. It is installed at the back on the roof of the body or the surface of the trunk.
- Special panels for the bottom and thresholds. With the help of special overlays, the suspension and thresholds are covered from oncoming air flows, side vortices, as well as from dirt, rot, rust.
- Side moldings. This is a group of overlays that is most often used for decoration, but at the same time they allow you to make the side lines of the car body more emphasized and visually noticeable. Moldings perfectly cope with the task of giving the car a squatter and elongated look, which adds sporty characteristics to the car.
What points to pay attention to when choosing car body kits?
When thinking about how to choose body kits for a car, you need to start by defining two points for yourself:
- to solve which tasks are the overlays selected;
- which materials produce the best elements.
As for the tasks to be solved, they were described in detail above for each type of body kits used today for cars. Next, you should consider the materials that are best suited for overlays. Today, body kits are used:
- ABS plastic. This is a special type of plastic that has increased impact resistance, excellent flexibility and reliability, the ability to recover its shape, withstand negative environmental influences, and is affordable.
- Carbon. It is a composite material with carbon fiber. It has an optimal strength-to-weight ratio, increased wear resistance, and an original appearance for solving the tasks of installing body kits in cars. It withstands temperature changes and will not become brittle from low temperatures, but it is not cheap.
- Textured polyurethane. It is foamed and rubberized. Both options are used, although in terms of impact strength, adhesion, flexibility, the ability to resist deformation and return to shape, the second one wins.
When choosing, be sure to take into account the car brand, model, year of manufacture, since manufacturers offer model products that are made
for a specific car and will perfectly cope with their tasks when used on it.
Questions of buyers
1) Which brands produce the best body kits for cars?
Today there are many good manufacturers. The leaders are EGR, Rieger.
2) Is it possible to install model body kits in the car yourself?
For decorative cases, it is possible, but ensuring high-speed trips is not desirable, it is better to entrust the work to specialists, as a strong fastening is necessary.
3) Where are EGR body kits manufactured?
EGR is an Australian manufacturer, but has a British branch in Europe.
